How much does stump grinding cost in Lake Country?

The short answer: we price by stump size, not a flat per-inch rate. Small stumps under 10 inches run $60–$150, medium stumps from 10 to 30 inches run $150–$300, and large stumps over 30 inches run $300–$600 and up. A typical 14-inch front-yard stump lands in the medium band around $150–$200 ground; add roughly $70 for haul-away and $140 for topsoil and grass seed.

That pricing is consistent across Lake Country, the variation comes from add-ons. Cheap quotes that come in under $100 usually skip the cleanup and only grind to grade level, leaving roots that re-sprout. We grind 4–6 inches below grade so you can plant grass right over the spot.

How to measure your stump

The Emerald Ash Borer cleanup nobody else is talking about

Lake Country lost thousands of ash trees to Emerald Ash Borer between roughly 2008 and 2018. A lot of those trees got cut down, but the stumps stayed. If you have a 12–24 inch dead ash stump in your yard, that's likely an EAB casualty, and the wood is now brittle and unstable.

We've made this a specialty. EAB-damaged ash needs a careful approach because the wood splinters and the root flare often runs shallow. We've ground hundreds of these across Oconomowoc, Hartland, Delafield, and the surrounding Lake Country communities. Read more about our ash stump cleanup service →

Lake-property and shoreland stumps

Lake Country has over 140 lakes. If your stump is on Pewaukee Lake, Lac La Belle, Pine Lake, Nagawicka, Okauchee, or any property within 1,000 feet of a Waukesha County lake or 300 feet of a stream, you're in the Shoreland Protection Ordinance zone. Vegetation Removal permits sometimes apply to tree work in this zone, and grinding rules can vary.

We handle the permit research for our lakefront clients across Pewaukee, Oconomowoc, Chenequa, and Nashotah. See our Waukesha County permit guide for details.

Common questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Lake Country?

We price by stump size, not a flat per-inch rate. Small stumps under 10 inches run $60 to $150, medium stumps from 10 to 30 inches run $150 to $300, and large stumps over 30 inches run $300 to $600 and up. Most residential jobs land in the medium band. Add $5/inch for debris hauling and $10/inch for topsoil and grass seed.

How long does stump grinding take?

A standard residential stump (10–18 inches) is ground in 30 to 60 minutes. We grind to 4–6 inches below grade, sweep up the chips, and you can plant grass within a few days.

Do I need a permit to grind a stump in Waukesha County?

For most properties, no. Permits are only required if your property is within 1,000 feet of a lake, 300 feet of a stream, or in special zoning districts. Lake Country has lots of shoreland, Pewaukee Lake, Lac La Belle, Pine Lake, Nagawicka, and others, and we handle the permit research for those jobs.

Can you handle the dead ash stumps left over from Emerald Ash Borer?

Yes, that's a big part of our work in Lake Country. The region lost thousands of ash trees to EAB starting around 2008. EAB-killed ash wood becomes brittle and the root systems are often shallow, so we use a controlled grinding approach. We've cleaned up hundreds of EAB stumps across Oconomowoc, Hartland, Delafield, and the rest of Lake Country.

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chews the stump down 4–6 inches below soil level using a rotating cutter wheel, fast, clean, and cheaper. The roots stay underground and decompose naturally over years. Full removal pulls out the entire stump and root ball, which costs 2–4× more and leaves a large hole. Grinding is right for ~90% of homeowners; removal is for new construction, deep landscaping, or pool installation.

How quickly can you grind my stump?

Free quote within 24 hours, on-site grinding usually within 2–5 business days. For storm-damage stumps blocking driveways or walkways, we offer same-day service when our schedule allows.
