Real answers to the questions our Lake Country customers actually ask.
Most residential stump grinding in Waukesha costs $150 to $600 per stump. We charge $3–$4 per inch of stump diameter, with a $150 minimum job charge. A typical 14-inch stump runs about $150–$200 for grinding only. Add $5/inch for debris haul-away and $10/inch for topsoil and grass seed restoration.
A standard residential stump (10–18 inches in diameter) takes 30 to 60 minutes to grind. Setup and breakdown adds another 15–20 minutes. We can usually finish multiple stumps in a single 2–3 hour visit. Larger 30+ inch stumps may take 90 minutes or more.
Standard depth is 4 to 6 inches below ground level — deep enough to plant grass over with no problems. If you want to plant a new tree in the same spot, ask for an 8–12 inch grind, which costs more but lets the new root system establish properly.
For most properties, no. Permits only apply if your property is within 1,000 feet of a lake, 300 feet of a stream, in an Environmental Corridor, or zoned EC. Lake-property and stream-adjacent homeowners should call Waukesha County Planning and Zoning at (262) 896-8300 — or have us verify on your behalf.
Grinding uses a rotating cutter wheel to chew the stump down to wood chips, 4–6 inches below grade. The roots stay underground and decompose naturally over 5–10 years. Full removal pulls the entire stump and root ball out with an excavator, leaving a large hole that needs fill. Grinding costs $150–$600; removal typically costs $400–$2,000+. Grinding is right for ~90% of homeowners.
Free quote within 24 hours, on-site grinding usually within 2–5 business days. For storm-damage stumps blocking driveways, walkways, or recovery work, we offer same-day service when our schedule allows.
Yes — that's a specialty for us. Lake Country and Waukesha County lost thousands of ash trees to Emerald Ash Borer between 2008 and 2018, and many of those stumps are still in yards. EAB-killed ash wood is brittle and the root systems are often shallow, so we use a controlled grinding approach. We've cleaned up hundreds of EAB ash stumps across Oconomowoc, Hartland, Delafield, Pewaukee, and the surrounding Lake Country communities.
Once the stump is ground 4–6 inches below grade, the tree cannot regrow — but the underground roots will remain in the soil and decompose over years. For most species (oak, maple, ash, elm), this is fine and no further action is needed. For aggressive sprouters like silver maple or cottonwood, occasional shoots may pop up for 1–2 years, which can be cut or treated.
Basic cleanup is included — we sweep the chips into a pile or back into the hole, depending on what you prefer. Full debris haul-away is $5 per inch of stump diameter (so about $70 for a 14-inch stump). Many homeowners use the chips as mulch in garden beds.
We use turf-friendly stump grinders that minimize lawn damage — typically just a single tire track and the immediate work area around the stump. For tight backyard access, we use smaller machines that go through standard 36-inch gates. Some lawn impact is unavoidable, but we restore the work area and you should expect everything to recover within a few weeks.
You can grind stumps year-round in Waukesha County, including winter as long as the ground isn't frozen solid (rare in Waukesha). Spring (April–June) is our busiest stretch and pricing is firmest. Mid-summer (July–August) is our slowest season and may have better availability. Winter grinds work well when the ground is cool but unfrozen.
Stump grinding only goes 4–6 inches below grade, which is shallower than most utility lines. However, before grinding any stump, we recommend calling Wisconsin's Diggers Hotline at 811 to mark utilities — especially for stumps near the foundation, sidewalk, or driveway. We require this for any stump within 10 feet of a building.

Yes, but you should ask for a deeper grind (8–12 inches) and have us add fresh topsoil to the hole — replanting in pure stump chips will starve the new tree of nitrogen as the chips compost. Wait at least one growing season before replanting in the same spot if possible, and choose a different species when you can to avoid soil-borne pathogens.
